Music Work

Music Work: Personalized sessions using music to promote mental health and emotional healing. This is achieved through lessons or music appreciation. Music has been evaluated to see if it has other properties. The April 2001 edition A study published in the Journal of the Royal Society of Medicine evaluated the potential health benefits of Mozart's music.

Movement Training

Movement Training: Accessible physical activities to reduce stress and improve overall fitness. Movement therapy is a process through which a person learns to reeducate his or her body's movement and improve on patterns of movement that cause stress-related emotional conditions. Examples: Tai chi, hatha yoga, Feldenkrais, Alexander technique.

Mindfulness Coaching

Mindfulness Coaching: Techniques to develop awareness and presence, enhancing emotional

regulation.

Mindfulness asks the practitioner to focus deliberate attention on the present experience in a way that is nonjudgmental and non-striving. This concept has been integrated into counseling practices in both formal and informal ways, with promising results.

Mindfulness is a state that helps individuals become more aware of physical, mental, and emotional conditions without judgment. It has become increasingly popular in the healthcare industry and is employed in schools, businesses, and even the military (Chiesa & Malinowski, 2011).

About me

I am Robert Beck. I am a transplant New Yorker male with my preferred pronouns He/Him/His.

I grew up in Irvington, NY, moved to West Virginia in the summer of 1968, and moved from WV to NJ a few times before relocating to Los Angeles.

I have an MS in Studies in Human Behavior, and work as a fitness, music, and now Psychology teacher at SJC. My additional educational background includes a BA in Liberal Arts, two music degrees (Composing/Arranging, Percussion), an Associate Degree in Wellness, and two Black Belts in martial arts.

I've been teaching music and martial arts, along with a few public school positions for 44 years. I was an adjunct faculty member at West Virginia State University for a year before graduation in 1982. I was also an assistant instructor of music at the Grove School in Los Angeles, a teacher’s assistant at Yu's Black Belt Institute, Red Dragon Martial Arts Academy, and a presenter of Wellness Programs at Raritan Valley College, NJ.

I am a member of the American Psychological Association, American Society of Music Arrangers and Composers, and American Council on Exercise.

I am also a Certified Life Coach with Race to Serenity, helping clients sort out their purpose in mind, body, and spirit. This program improves people’s lives by helping them break their negative belief patterns, act more decisively, and set clear goals towards achieving what they want from life. And in 2023 I'll be working on clinical hours to fulfill my Substance Abuse Counseling license.

I have three dogs who keep my wife and me young with their daily antics.  My wife is a therapist, which can lead to discussions of theory that I ultimately lose. She also is a fantastic cook and baker, singer/pianist for local groups, and the light of my life.

I am also the musical contractor at the Civic Center in Farmington, which provides the community with several productions each year. This is a gift to me via Randy West as I used to play in the recording studios and pit orchestras in LA and NY.

I enjoy hiking, biking, and riding my motorcycle in this paradise of mountain ranges and rock formations. I also enjoy baseball, football, basketball, and study Bagua (a martial art), which keeps my mind and body sharp.

And finally, I'm involved with New Mexico FaCES which is a program to help New
Mexico families become digital storytellers for their own communities, preserving language and culture through projects that showcase the creative power
of broadband.
